Dental Implant Surface and Design

Topographic and chemical modifications to improve osseointegration

Titanium implants are widely used in implant dentistry and orthopaedic surgery, and researches to improve these implant design and surfaces are nowadays very important. The Foundation actually supports 2 main types of research projects:

    - fundamental researches, for example focused on the cell behavior in contact with different titanium surfaces, and the influence of roughness and chemical modification on bone implant contact;

    - clinical studies, for example on the use of new implant design and surface on the clinical results in complex treatments, such as immediate post-avulsion implantation in implant dentistry.

    These projects are only actual examples supported by the Foundation. This field of investigation is wide, and many works are actually on progress, such as comparative analyses and classification of surfaces, developement of new surfaces, investigations in the pathologies of osseointegration (periimplantitis) and potential treatments.
