Imaging and Radioprotection

CT Scanner, Cone Beam and Radioprotection

The Foundation has a strong interest for research in the fields of radioprotection and imaging, due to the teaching thematics of several LoB5 founders and scientific directors. At the beginning, this field of investigation focused on oral and maxillo-facial radiology and radioprotection, and the development of new imaging technologies such as  “Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)” (replacing the classical helical CT scan), its influence in daily clinical practice and the associated Health Policy issues. The Foundation actually supports some studies about the dosimetry of new Cone Beam devices, and about the influence of CT scan prescription in implant Dentistry on the global exposition (and associated cancer risk) in the population.

This field of investigation is also opening to a more experimental approach, particularly the use of microCT scan and other non destructive analysis procedures (light scan, micro PET scan, synchrotron...) for the developement and validation of new materials (such as bone substitutes or implant) or for a better knowledge of tissue biology and architecture.

Applications of Physics in biological research is clearly a major concern for the scientific board of the Foundation, because most analytical techniques and discoveries are dependent on an adequate expertise in these fundamental sciences.
